Hair Extension Home Care
Avoid
- Avoid sleeping with wet or damp hair. This will cause matting.
- Avoid submerging hair in chlorinated/ salt water. If submerging cannot be avoided, wet hair with fresh water and apply leave-in conditioner. Braid hair tightly to avoid tangles. Shampoo and condition immediately afterwards.
- Avoid sunscreens containing the ingredient "avobenzone". This ingredient will discolor extensions and will NOT come out. Use mineral sunscreen instead. (You may purchase Goldie Locks sunscreen in studio at your visit.)
Brushing
- Brush Hair thoroughly multiple times per day.
- If you have curly extensions, brush as needed as you would with your natural curls. Consider using a mist bottle with water and leave in to refresh curls.
- Separate Rows brushing one row at a time.
- With your free hand, keep pressure at the base of your extensions to eliminate unnecessary tension and pulling while you brush.
- Start brushing at the bottom of the extensions, working your way up to the base to avoid any new tangles from forming.
- Use a brush with fine, flexible bristles like the 'Wetbrush' when brushing hair.
- Be careful not to brush the top of the wefts, brushing the wefts can cause damage to your extensions and shorten the life of your extensions.
Shampooing
- Brush thoroughly before shampooing.
- You may have to shampoo twice to get a good lather that cleans around your rows.
- Gently scrub between rows and rinse thoroughly.
- Do not vigorously shampoo your extensions/ wefts! Shampooing in a gentle downward motion will keep the hairs integrity intact.
- Towel dry and use leave-in conditioner.
- Do not wrap hair in a towel on top of the head. This will cause unnecessary tension and pulling from the front beads.
- Use a moisture conditioning masque once per week or at least every other week to help keep extensions hydrated.
Styling
- After shampooing and detangling with a leave-in conditioner, dry the base of rows with a blow dryer. Prolonged moisture at the base of the rows can cause the wefts to 'swell', ultimately shortening the lifespan of the extensions.
- You may air dry the rest of the way after the base has been dried or continue to blow-dry as usual.
- Always use heat protection before styling.
- Make sure hair is 100% dry before using hot tools.
- Heat on styling tools should be no hotter than 325 degrees.
- You may use any products you would use on your natural hair when styling. Feel free to contact your stylist for recommendations at any time. We also carry a full range of hair care designed for hair extensions available in studio for purchase.
Sleep
- Braid hair or secure with low bun before sleep to avoid matting or unnecessary tangles or pulling while sleeping.
- Always sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase.
- Avoid sleeping with damp/ wet hair.
- Consider sleeping with a silk or satin bonnet and/or a head band to keep front beads flat if you're a wild sleeper to avoid unnecessary pulling.
Maintenance
- The recommended maintenance for hair extensions is 6-10 weeks.
- On average, extension hair will last 8-12 months depending on color and proper home care.
